At first yeah it makes sense, because it's an act of rebellion against Japanese society and for the emos its an act of rebellion towards Western society. But when you look at the meaning of GANGURO it literally means "black face" (gan=face, kuro=black''') and this is shown by their deep tans. For emos/ scene people they normally are very pale and definitely don't have deep tans.

Not really, well, I suppose you could look at it that way now. There's a branch of them called Kogal that mimics specifically california style, though through some strewed looking glass. There were no scene kids back then. No such thing. All they were doing was mimicking a pornstar's look. And rebelling against the traditional idea of beauty in Japan.
Unfortunately they look like shit. beauty remains the same, and they're all going to die of skin cancer...
